Chinese government cancelled the OASIS concert

I was gonna go with my mates to Oasis concert in the beggining of April, in Beijing. We already bought tickets for 400RMB (approx. 1200 CZ crowns) and I was looking forward to see and hear them (especially after living a year in Manchester) at the Workers stadium near San Li Tun area, not very far from a place where I live, but...the concert was suddenly cancelled.

There is no doubt that there is a censorship in China (from last week "Youtube" is banned down from the internet, for example). If a foreign band wants to play on public in China they have to submit pictures, history of the band, records and all the lyrics translated into english and chinese. This is particular funny among Hip-hop and Metal bands in case of "deeep-meaning" lyrics:-)

So, usually unsuitable bands are not given a permission to perform. The interesting thing about this case is the concert was approved by the Ministry of Culture, but later urgently withdrawn. As a reason might be a Noel Gallagher's performance over free Tibet in New York 2007, but one never know in China...at least we got the money back for tickets.

Czech beer "Černá hora" for the first time in China!

Friday, March 6 2009 was the day when the first shop with a czech beer "Černá hora" (Black mountain) was opened in Tianjin, China. The picture is from the official opening of the first shop followed by dinner. The distrubution company wants to open more shops in other major chinese cities. The very interesting information for me was, that the czech beer was brought to China actually by 2 chinese women who were interested to import czech beer.

World's fastest train Bejing-Shanghai

China is building the world's fastest bullet train, to link Beijing with the financial capital Shanghai. New technology will enable trains to travel at 380 km/h. With China's two most important cities separated by 1,318 kilometres, the new line will be the longest high-speed railway to be built in one go in the world. There are some faster trains (e.g. TGV in France), but maintains that speed only for a short period.

The Tianjin route uses 350 km/h trains relying on technology imported from the German engineering giant Siemens. A local company is building up production to 50 trains a year. Last Friday I went to Tianjin by this train and we were running at 316 km/h.The trains as well as the train stations are very clean and comfortable.

There is a Maglev train in Shanghai which runs between the city of Shanghai and the Pudong airport. The journey takes 7 minutes and 20 seconds to complete the distance of 30 km. A train can reach 350 km/h in 2 minutes, with the maximum normal operation speed of 431 km/h reached thereafter.

Is this the end? The MAGLEV, or magnetic levitation, is a system of transportation that using levitation from a very large number of magnets for lift and propulsion. This method has the potential to be faster, quieter and smoother than wheeled mass transit systems. The technology has the potential to exceed 6437 km/ (yes, six thousand - it is not a mistake) if deployed in an evacuated tunnel. Respect!

MTBiking around Beijing

On Saturday we usually ride a bike and enjoying adrenalin when going downhill fast:-) Meeting at the Drumm Tower in the morning, having a cofee, fat breakfest and than leaving outside Beijing.

Two weeks ago still having a hard time on snow.

Time for refreshment with some crazy chinese bikers. There is a cottage on the top of the mountain with an old chinese grandma serving spicy noodles.

Hanging Temple

The Hanging Temple got its name because of its special characterics. It is a religius site for Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. The Hanging temple hangs above a deep valley. There are 17 halls among 11 are Buddhist, 5 Taoist and one combining three religions.Coincidentally, Counfucius, Lao Zi nad Sakyamuni appeared during the same time period more than 2,000 years ago. During the Song dynasty (960 - 1279) the idea of 'cultivating one's mind through Buddhism, strenghtening one's body through Taoism and running a country through Confucianism' prevailed. Since than the three religions coexisted.The entire temple is supported by wooden beams inserted into the cliff. After several hundred years, it remains in perfect shape, which is trully amazing! Walking in the temples feels like walking on on air.

Mt. Hengshan

Mount Hengshan is known as a Taoist mountain. During the Northern Wei Dynasty was there Taoism developed. It prevailed during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) during which time most Taoist temples were built all over the mountain. Mount Hengsahng is the highest among the five sacred mountains.It is said Zhang Guolao, one of the China's eight immortals lived here while he cultivated his religious way. In the Ming dynasty, Taoism was elevated to a higher position as Mount Hengshan became the Sacred Nothern Mountain. Most of the structure of buildings nowadays date back to the Ming Dynasty.The Temple of the Sacred Northern Mountain, located at the foot of the cliff is the most majestic temple complex on Mount Hengshan. Having entered the mountain gate, have to climb 103 stone steps.

The Wooden Pagoda in Yingxian

As a part of our trip about 400km from Beijing we visited Sakyamuni Pagoda of Buddha Palace near one of the 3 million cities called Datong.

This pagoda is the most ancient and tallest remaining wooden structure in the world, with 67m as its height and 30m as its diameter. No iron nails have been used for the construction. There is an 11m high statue of a sitting Sakyamuni on the first storey of the pagoda.There have been seven severe earthquakes, among which the most severe happened in 1328 and lasted seven days. The wooden pagoda remained untouched.

China's New Year's Festival or sometimes called Spring festival is the most traditional and popular festival in China. Different parts of China celebrate the festival in different ways, although all have some similar features.

Celebration of New Chinese Lunar year brings millions of people in and outside China (especially large chinese communities in Asia and China towns all around the world) to traditionall festivities. This upcoming year of the "OX" is dated on January 26 2009.

The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first lunar month (Chinese 正月 - pinyin: zhēng yuè) in the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th. This day is called Lantern Festival. Chinese New Year's Eve is known as Chúxī. It literally means "Year-pass Eve".

China is home to 56 different ethnic minorities, and each of them have their own unique folk-customs. These differences are most obvious during the Chinese New Year when each ethnic minority group celebrates the New Year in their own way with their own unique traditions.

Spring Couplets

Chinese New Year Couplets are an indispensible part of the New Year celebrations. The red paper strips with calligraphic poems are pasted on either side of doors with a four character auspicious expression pasted on the lintel. Each couplet is made of up two lines of verse which is called the head and tail. The head and the tail each have the same number of characters on them. These lines much match each other phonologically and syntactically.

There are many different types of couplets used during the Chinese New Year. Families'couplets often express the wish for luck and prosperity, while businessmen's couplets express the wish for high earnings in the upcoming year.

The Great Wall

This is a part of 6000 kilometres long Great wall which was securing old chinese border.

Temperature in the morning was minus 13 degrees of celsius, but "Krtek" did not forget his yellow swedish hat.

We have done an amazing 10 kilometres hike to a place called Simatai. The very last part dome by rope zip slide over the river.

..and one of the towers we passed on our 4 hours tour. Sometimes it is not fun to climb up on small and steep stairs. But in case start raining one can hide from the rain.

People living around in small villiges are hiking together with the tourist and trying to sell water or souveniers on the way. It is almost unbelievable to see 70 years old grandma's doing this hike to Simatai and back or other way around in minus temperatures, wearing catastrophical sneakers and concerned doing thier job.

Beijing January

This picture is from the BEIJING SOUTH train STATION which is more like at the airport, as Yuhi commented. There are nice seats with table for having a rest or snack. Toilets that one almost "can eat from the floor" and plenty of western type expensive cafe's.This is modern Beijing:-)

This is CENTRAL BEIJING STATION. Many people staying in front of the station like on a big square. Lots of poeple everyday commuting to city. Sometimes waiting long time for their trains with extremely huge baggages. Some of them doing their business in the Nothern City what the chinese characters say about this Chinese capital.

City highlights on Beijing underground commercial board. The ticket in Beijing for metro cost 2RMB (about 25 Euro Cents) for any station in the network. Inside the metro tunnel are blinking commercial lightboards on the wall which makes an optical illusion of continuing movement like in an old film where photographs are changing in very high sequence. Interesting!

A chinese restaurant in Simatai, a place near the Great wall. The round hole in the wall is very typical chinese architecture and is used as an entrance.

King Kobra Restaurant

After travelling through Asia and few days in Osaka I am finally back home in Czech republic:-)

--do not take AIR FRANCE on long flights.. if You do not speak french people are arogant, one of my baggage get lost on Paris and on a 12 hour flight the stewardess did not even served the customers..in the middle of plain was self service from left plastic bottles of coke and ice cream from a manufacturer box hehe. Waking up my seat neighbout all the times was not very pleasant.

At the Osaka airport usually air companies don`t care about a few kilos of overweight. Due to a overcharged 30EUR per kilogram there were people (including me to put down weight) dressing winter jackets on themsleves to go to check-in while other people queing had to wait. In case of Air France I understand why U have t0 be at the airport 3 hours before flight:-) Not really good reputation for this company!

My next semestr in Brno starts on monday, but before that I will post here finally photos from my travelling. Only half of them due to my USB flash disk was infected by virus in China in hotel were did not use antivirus hehe.. hope I can restore the photos because cna not open even a single file. Anybody can help? Any idea? What software?

GILI ISLANDS

Greeting from a paradise on Gili Trawangan. Many happy people and paradise on earth:-) Today I went snorcheling, saw a coral reef and swimming turtles.
Three small Gili islands are northern from Lombok Island, which is accesible by boat from Bali in few hours. The total population on our Island is around 1000 people. Most of local people are muslim which is in contrast to Bali where Hinduese people live (a bit different than in India, have own God and traditional festivals). Tonight is a last party because on first of September starts Ramadan. People are playing some traditional music outside - do not wanna miss it:-)

Kuala Lumpur

In the airplain I had a malay nassi meal, which left the chinese taste behind. During the flight we were able to see sunset over the level of cloudes and later while landing a Petronas towers as a symbol of Malaysia`s socio-economic progress and achievements.

On the way to CHina town, where is my hostel I met a mexican guy living, studying and doing business in China, mainly trying to achieve better contacts between government of mexico and China. Later we went for dinner which was twice cheaper thna one beer later. As a muslim country the alcohol here is very expensive (0.3L bottled beer 8RMB = cca. 40CZK/ draft 13 RMB).

Kuala Lumpur is very clean city with a hyper modern downtown, shopping district and convenient transportation system thanks to a Skytrain. Excpet of things whish does not fit with teh main Muslim ethics it is relatively cheap. Almost everyone speaks very good english. Used to be a British colony, the british influence is visible. Everyday life seems to be peaceful and tolerant. Women are wearing traditional dresses, Burkas or modern sexy youngsters styles does not matter if You are at traditional market, Channel store or fast food window.

Taxi drivers are driving on the left hand side of the road and offering every foreign male tourist a "Bum-Bum" young south-asian pussy. Prostitution is a big issue in South-East Asia.

Today I visited Petronas Twin Towers. They are the tallest twin towers in the world located in "KL" city center 452m above the street level (255 times taller than me:-).
The design of each tower`s floor plan is based on simple Islamic geometric forms of two interlocking squars creating a shape of eight-pointed stars. These forms reflect important Islamic principles of "unity within unity, harmony, stability and rationality"
The hollow space between the towers is linked by the Skybridge at Levels 41 and 42 (Sky Lobby). It is symbolising a gateway to the future!
As a tourist You can get to the skybridge for free, but have to get Your tickets early in tyhe morning because there is a limited amount of tickets for every day. Designs and patterns of the entrance halls ` foyer interior are based on traditional Malaysian motives of handicraft nad weaving. Outside is a heavy Monsoon rain.

Last days in China

For the very last days in China I went to Louyang (6 hours by train from Xian). Near Louyang is famous overpriced Shaolin Temple, which I did not go and Longman caves what is a beautiful place near river with Buddhost statues carved in a rock massive. Very nice scenery, not many people and Buddhost temple on the opposite site of the river makes it a fantastic visit for couple of hours.

It was the only place in China we did not get a student discount for a ticket (only for Chinese).

It was a good refreshing stop before moving to another big city which has double amount of Scyscrapers than New York. Yes, it is a Shanghai which is sometimes called stomach of China(Beijing is a mouth of the country and Xi`an as a heart). A night train takes about 13 hours. We got a room in a hostel near Shanghai harbour where U can go for one of the most famous strolls in a world with a view on the Oriental tower and Shanghai finance downtown on the other bunk of the river Huang Poh (Also with two huge McDonalds golden archs hitting your eyes almost saying free clean toilet:-). Could not make a Shanghai Old town with fabulous gardens packed with Japanese tourists because closing town. It is in my itinerary for next time.

The cherry on the top was evening Acrobatic performance which was totally amazing. I have never seen such a things live ever before. Just wait for the Videos!

Early morning I had to leave to Hangzhou which was 1 hour by first-class train from Shanghai. After reaching the station was impossible to find out how to get to the airport until I had to ask in a foreign luxury hotel (this is always an option) and one of the employees showed me the way to take a shuttle bus from another hotel. No signs, people only offering You taxis..a little bit complicated. First bus was full, with a second one I reached airport and finally checked-in for a flight to Kuala Lumpur which was cancelled and postponed for one day. I will have one day-less in Malaysia and probably will not see Singapore what was my original plan.

Many chinese do not care about anything else than money. Government is Ok, because economy is good! Lifestandart is better so why should we care often we hear.

Difference between people staying abroad and people who did not get out of the country. They love china and they do not know why. Everyone has to be busy and do something does not matter if it makes sense or not. Thses are the result of the cultural revolution one might say.

Chinese spitting on the ground in the restaurant. Throwing cigarrete butts on the floor. Playing drinking games (long nail on little finger as a meaning that do not work mannualy..probably working a s a taxi driver..sort of independence symbol that can drive anywhere in the city where he wants). After finishing a glass of beer smoke a cigarette, pour for other make glass full and repeat whol eprocess again. After leaving the restaurant stuff has to sweap chicken bones around the table:-)

Today we wanted to buy a train tickets. I wanted to go to Shanghai..about 10 trains a day, but only few places for standing for 15 hours ride. My friends wanted top take a boat trip on Yang Tze river, but could not get to Chongqing as a departure point because no train tickets left. The point is if U wanna buy a train ticket in China by yourself, it is possible (not only through hotels), but make sure You do it at least 2 or 3 days before. We are stuck..changing our plan and going to Luoyang city check the Longman caves.

XI` AN old historical capital of China!

Do not be surprised that it is not that historical:-) Xi`An is developing city with developing atmosphere.

Firstly some travelling advices:If U planning go to XiAn from Beijing my recommendations is take a night train Z19 deprting from Beijing at 21:24 and pay for the hardsleeper (265 Yuan). Another option is a soft sleeper but the only difference is that in one coupe is 4 beds instead of 6. But having a bed is better than only seats. The ride took us 12 hours with another two noisy Chinese making funny sounds when could not spit in the train and one women hiding her children on front of conductor, probably to save money on ticket. Otherwise it was OK, trains are decently clean and except of little space in coupe You can spend a night quiet without any problems.

After arriving in Xian we started to be chased by local haunters offering different kinds of accomodation. We ended up in LUDAO YOUTH HOSTEL paying 165Yuan for room for three (But have to bargain! If U see the hostel is not full push as low as possible). Internet is for free, laundry for little charge and You can borow bikes for 10 Yuan a day. Probably it is not the cheapest hostel (we have seen some rooms for three also for 100Yuan), but I can recommend this one as pretty comfortable with shower and bathroom in our room.
Originally I had bookings for another hostel Bell Tower for about 50 Yuan per person wehat seems to be a stndard price in China for a shared dorm for 6 or 8 people.

We rent a bicycles and went around the city wall to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. In front of Xi`an Da Ci`en Temple area is a chilling square with many attractions like darts (winning possibility of teddy bears), street basketball or water vehicles for children. Pagoda itself is sorrounded by small temples and places for buddhist pray.

Our another destination was Muslim quarter with a Xi`an Great Mosque. This mosque looks totally differewnt from what we recognize as a mosque, but probably is much older than thise we know. The construction sdtarted 742 AD. Its mixture of chinese style architecture with arabic writings nad Asian people wearing muslim closes makes this place very interesting. After visiting the great Mosque, same district is market area where U can buy all kind of staff. It is cheap, but very poor quality. Things we have seen on a Silk market in Beijing seemed that You can use them even more than twice! It is really difficult to buy something even U like it. Maybe buying souveniers as a present like cards with Mao Ze Tong is worth it. Sometimes if U say U like some other brand thay take U in a sched where is like another shop with more fake staff haha:-))
Even though my friends were afraid of eating from stalls on the street we tried a kebab and than we moved back to hostel because it started raining. Must say that before I return bike today wanna go see the Starting Poh Point of Silk Road.

The Great Wall

If You take about a two and half hour ride by car from Beijing, You can get to the village called Simatai and in front of You magnificently appears the great wall.

The air is not so much polluted as in the big cities and compare to other visiting places (including other great wall destinations) You usually do not meet crowds of foreigners. It is a wonderful place where You can start about a 10km hike towards another village JinShanLing..

At the beggining of Your hike (more climbing) one can take a cable car and mini train to make it easier at the beggining. Than You meet first people selling souveniers, icecold water and following You and trying to sell You any kind of items. After seeing a wonderful scenery of green hills and huge great wall passing through it, another good 4 hours of hiking is before You.

You can take easier way sometimes along the wall, but most exciting is to take the wall way with not maintained small and steep steps. It is really unique experience. The Wall starts in QinHuanDao in north-east of China and continue for another 6 or 7 thousand kilometres. What a feeling! Questioning how they build it and how much effort it must take were following me all the way. Must also say that except of the last part, the wall looks really old and not maintained for a long time which makes it better (like in a medieval times somebody have said).

Around half of your trip You have to pay another ticket due to entering the JinShangLing Great Wall sector and on one side chinese government is building a huge highway which in that area looks lake a pale on Your eye. Old women with bad shoes are following You even for an hour just to sell You a T-shirt. Her selling strategy worked out, because finally i have bought one just to get rid of her. If You run out of water do not worry, there is always someone to buy it from.

At the end of our hike started raining. We have had to hide in one of the towers and wait until it gets less. Suddenly the visibility was poor and fog everywhere. Luckily we were almost in JinShanLing so when it was possible and no big thunders we ran in a heavy Monsun rain wearung a poncho towards meeting our driver who was waiting for us. The wall itself is at some parts not as big as You might imagine. The fact that You can see it from satelite is a myth I also have heard. But the wideness and magnificiency of the Great Wall is incredible. If You ever go to CHina it is a must to see:-)

No wonder the great wall is one of the 7 biggest wonders of this world:-)

Tennis day

Today it was probably my last olympic game, because some of our tickets did not arrive by post and chance of getting a new ones is a minimum.But for the last event I have enjoyed maximaly. We did not know the schedule due to the rain previous day so we were coming in the morning full of excitement which game we will see.

The area is in the "olympic green" area, olympic village near the stadium for field hockey and archery. There is one central court, big courts number one and two, and than another six relatively small tennis courts for less attractive games for media.

Our ticket is for the morning schedule 10:30-17:00 with the entrance to the Centre Court with the following schedule:

In the second set Italian guy was playing extremely well, but at the end was apparent of teh game was apparent the level difference.

(This game lasted only about 20 minutes becuase they were finishing it from the day before)
Serena Williams looks actually bigger than on the TV screen to me and WOW!!! that women has a power in her hands:-)

I must say that how Federer plays is fantastic. Such a elegant, nice and useful play I have never seen before!

The same day I also saw a last games how our czech player Nicole Vaidis lost with a french player and some other czech players on the tribune supporting her.Thus its not important to win, but take a part:-)

I was leaving the tennis park with a feeling of seeing the best players on this special tournament!

Basketball Day

Yesterday was a full of sightseeing. Sometimes we almost could not see any smog so the sky was blue and weather was hot and humid. After passing a gate under Mao Zetong big portrait at Tian`an Man square we arrived in the Forbidden city. Very huge and mignificent place. Only disadvantage was so many people there. Surprisingly lots of Chinese people travelling and arriving to Beijing just to try the olympic atmosphere. Often they wanna take a picture with me and with their whole family. After first question Where R U from? continues another one....: Do You participate in any olympic discipline?

In the morning nobody much knew about Czech republic, but when I was returning back to my hostel Katerina Emmons won a gold medal, czech flag was in every television on a second position after China on the medal chart:-)

In the morning I finally hold a ticket in my hand for a basketball game. Thanks to my dutch friends who got some tickets in advance I am able to see a Russia-Iran and Germany-Angola game at the Wukesong stadium. The ticket serves also as a transportation day pass in Beijing.

Inside the stadium one can feel olympicism in the air, people are nice to each other (not pushing each other Chinese as normally) and everyone is enjoying this time. Almost one third of the stadium is reserved for the media and because just preliminary matches empty! The rest is occupied with a mix of chinese people and supporters from diferent countries who together make "mexican" waves, create fantastic atmosphere and trully enjoying every nice moment of the game.

At the beggining of the second game suddenly everyone watching one sector on the stadium just between me and media sector. Some Chinese basketball players are coming. As many others also I am taking a picture with a famous chinese professional basketball player Yao Ming, born on September 12 1980. He currently plays center for the Houston Rockets in the National Basketball Association. Yao Ming is one of the tallest players in NBA basketball, listed at a playing height of 7 feet, 6 inches and is rumored to still be growing. He is one of teh most popular Chinese sportsman!

Security is everywhere..In the subway, underground, entrances and sometimes You have to open Your bags in a bus or train for security check. It is little bit annoying all the times, but organized well!

Beijing Olympics

The day of the Opening ceremony:

Tian`an Man square was closed as well as the Forbidden city, Lama Temple, Mao ZeTong mausoleum and many other places and some subway stations. I could not even send a postcard due to closed post office. Generally at 8/8/2008 was everything closed due to the Olympic games.
In the evening we were planning to see the fireworks near the Olympic stadium. The result was that we could not get even near to the "Birds Nest". The stadium was not possible to see at all. I was feeling sorry for all the chineses people who seems to be so proud about the games and without being really informed in advance the organizers closed all the main points for watching the opening ceremony.

Finally we took a taxi to Haidian park for an event with a big screen. Not surprised anymore the event was cancelled and we luckily ended up in "Casa Di Italia" - a place for Italian team and supporters where we watched the opening on a big screen with a nice sound, eating nice pasta, drinking italiam piccolo coffee and eating Gelato ice cream. It is a building packed with Italian companies promoting their products and after registration everyone can enter as a potencial Italian supporter:-)

The braodcasting of opening ceremony in Chinese TV was one minute later than in Europe, Internet sites like BBC was during the olympics unblocked, about demonstrations made by foreign students (who were immediately sent home) chinese people have no clue. Generally people are not informed very well. About 70.000 volunteers are working throughout Beijing, but when You ask them something You rarely get a satisfactory answer.

BEIJING

The cost of travel from QinHuan Dao to Beijing by bus was 90Yuan (RMB), but we did not have enough cash. While looking for an ATM where possible to withdraw, the bus was waiting for us. At the end it was incredible 20 minutes delay just because of us. I must say chinese people really helped us, because train tickets were sold out and this was the last bus of the day. You have to book tickets through your hotel in advance otherwise it is very complicated!

The bus ride was about 3 hours. Peking is impressing with wide roads and modern building everywhere around. I have booked hostel only for one night. Prices are 5times higher or more than usual because of Olympics. The Olympic games are now excuse for everything. Lots of people did not get Visa, some students or foreign workers had to leave China because their Visa was not extended.

Chinese people have guides in Televisin how to approach foreigners. Usually should smile (training with a chopstick in a mouth and not to show more than 8 teeth..its rediculous isn`t it?), not to spit, not to ask questins about salary and so on...

After arrival I found a hostel for a decent price thanks to a girl from Barcelona who speak fluently Chinese. My friends paid 240Yuan per person per night in a room for 8 people. I have rented a room for 160 Yuan. Three people can fit in, so my dutch friends moving to my place soon...

Convenience stores on the corner, dining places where local people goes and using a public trabsport instead of taxi can make the cost of living in Beijing probably for little bit less expense as in Czech republic.

Interesting thing is that one ride in subway usually cost 5Yuan (anywhere in the city), but during the olympic time it is only 2 Yuan because they want less cars in the city and want people to use more public transportation.

Smog is everywhere, it is exactly kind of fog and You can not see very far. But it is not as bad as I expected. If You are in Beijing U shoud try the Beijing duck (whole duck about 170 Yuan in a nice restaurant) with a little meet on it, but crispy skin, full of delicious sauce. With our duck we received a certificate with a number of duck served since the restaurant was open:-)

China - Qin Huan Dao

After our arrival we were welcomed with a police cordon standning in a row. Than we moved to Immigration control. It took about an hour to get through the procedures.

We had to go in a separate room with 5 people in uniform and two without and they were asking us questions such as: "When did You start Your holiday"? After explaning carefully we were asked again: " I am asking You again!! When did You start Your holiday"!!? and so on...

There was always one nice gyu and one evil guy talking agressively in chinese.
Later the checked carefully our backpacks (girls in uniform were searching through our sweaty underwear hehe:-)

To be truth we did not have much evidence for them to provide accomodation and had no cash with us. After findning my diary with a travel schedule it was fine, they apologized for such a treatment that they have to do it and helped us to find a nice hotel.

Xi Yuan Hotel - Qin Huan Dao 160Yuan per two bedroom and dinner in a restaurant next door for 20Yuan. Taxis are reasonable (5Yuan starting), even though china is getting more and more expensive in cities. Finding a internet cafe accepting foreigners was impossible, because everyone needs Chinese ID to be allowed.

QinHuanDao is a port and one of the olympic cities where football tournament will be held. It is named after emperor Qin who unified China and was seeking immortality there. We have visited a Dragon`s Had next morning where is the beggining of the Great Wall and First pass Under the Heaven!! Qin and Song Dynasty Museum was full of original paintings, ceramics, guns and providing a good example of everyday life during this historical periods.

Lots of Chinese man showing their belly with the T-shirt rolled up, in buses they always check luggage if having any vorbidden items. Young Chinese volunteers exercising on public places and every Taxi with a chinese flag on caroseries.

Arriving in Busan

After arriving in Busan we quickly realised this is not a modern metropole. Instead there are many lovely streets with selling all kinds of stuff including the fake fashion brands and everything possibly made in China.

We took a city tour bus in front of Busan train station and went through the city with a hop on/hop off system. If U wanna spend one day in Busan I can recommend this trip (10.000Won..cca. 10USD) with a stops in the country`s biggest Fish market or War memorial for the sodliers defending South Korea in the Korean War.

From my point of view the city is divided into a Port and than old and modern part which is probably an example par excellance how South Korea is developing.

At the end of teh day we went to a (according to a Lonely planet) biggest hot bath in far east Asia and that one was fantastic! At the entrance one get a key with a barcode and than can spend a whole day there. If You wanna drink for example, the stuff scan the barcode and You pay everything afterwards. The entrance of around 8.000Won is definitely worth going. Icluded in are oxygen rooms, aroma therapy, mud bath, salt bath, cherry bath, big hot tub, dfifferent spices added baths, dry, wet saunas and iglooos in a relaxintg floor with different kinds of temperatures inside.
Massage trysks and falling waterfalls are not missing:-)

Taking last train to Seoul at 11PM we moved to pick up our luggage. System of fingerprints instead of code was really impressive. Trains to Seoul run quite often vary only depending on the price and time. Our ticket was 26.500Won and 5 and half hour ride. (If You take an KTX express probably take half of the time and will be twice more expensive). The train was allrigt with quite enough space for legs, but do not try to sit next to the door, otherwise You dont get much sleep..

25th My BIRTHDAY. I went for a Tenjin matsuri in Osaka. Lots of good food, Nice fireworks. Picknick with another 2 million people, urhhggg! Sometimes I feeled like there are too many people. At the end of the day went to Yuhi`s resaurant. It was originally an invitation for a Malt`s beer for my birthday:-) Very Oishii!

On 26th I was having a birthday party in my flat in Izumi, Osaka. Many of my friends came and I got also a chocolate birthday cake:-) Yuhi made by herselves Red and White Sangria and later was serving it. And what we ate? Avocado covered with raw ham and fried in tempura cover. Tortillas with spicy chicken, mexican spice and souer cream. I habe made czech "okonomiyaki" or potato pancakes if You want. As a topping with Guacamore sauce. It was a nice party with ending in early morning hours.

Next day we were packing , cleaning and leaving. Last night we spend in Yuhi`s flat in Tatsuminaka, near to Osaka-Namba. After taking a hot bath falled a sleep after heavy partying previous days.

On 28th July we left direction to Himeji and ended up in Hiroshima. We saw a atomic dome which remained staying as one of few after the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. The dome was designed by czech architect Jan Letzel.

29th July
Daniel who is travelling me is little bit irritated because did not sleep much last night. We are visiting a beautiful Miyajima island with a famous gate in the water, There are dears running around and tourists are taking many pictures as well as we do.

In the afternoon we are arriving in Shimonoseki port from where we are taking a boat to South Korean most busy port Busan. Daniel has got troubles with an immigration because he had a new passport without student Visa sticker. His Japanese Visa was in his old passpott which he was supposed to bring it with him. I think he was lucky he could get on the boat just because he was leaving Japan:-)

We are sleeping in bad with another people in a big room. There is cheaper version of sleeping on futon on the floor with many people in a small space. On the boat are lots of Koreans and we are only foreigners. Very positive think was a hot bath tubs where One can take a relaxing bath.

We left Shimonoseki at 6PM. Half past two in the morning I woke up due to a ship movement and already saw Korean land. The boat was waiting until morning when they opened the port.

JAPAN: Stereotypes and Paradoxes

Before we go to any foreign country we usually create an image of that particular culture based on shared information. If I mention Japan in my home country, people usually think about super-fast running trains, last generation of automatic robots or households full of electronics “Made in

Japan

”. There are many other deep-rooted stereotypes such as hardworking Japanese employees or exotic geishas, and it seems almost impossible to visit

Japan

for the first time without any previous preoccupations, especially if you live in different cultural background.

The lifestyle preferences tend to be changing. From my point fo view there is an increasing consumer behavior and especially young generation of people are from my point of view more “Americanized”. In this term I mean more influence through media from United States after the World War 2, especially in areas as fashion, music or eating habits for example. With regard to specific Japanese customs and conditions this is a most surprising issue for me after my arrival to

Japan

. Not the issue itself, but the way differences vary between the youth and elderly, modern and traditional, hi and low-tech, past and the future. As an example, more individualistic youth with colored hair, piercing, last-fashion clothes and always “cool” behaving still attending traditional festivals and following the traditional values. This is a great cultural paradox for me and my impressions and opinions about these areas of Japanese identity are changing day after day.

Japanese society is often depicted as a group-orientated with a focus on integration and harmony. The importance of harmony within the learning environment at Momoyama Gakuin University, for example, is apparent compared to the environment from my home country or England where I have studied for a while. My description of Japanese students will be more in terms of cooperation and internal coordination rather than tendency to demonstrate outstanding individuality compare to Europe. Japanese students are often very shy, not very talkative in discussions and sometimes I observe a lack of improvisation in many aspects during the classes (but not outside the university). Also unwillingness of taking final decisions seems to me as one of the symptoms of group-orientated behavior. On the other hand, no doubt there are many visible advantages of not individualistic learning style and people as a group can reach their aims more easily than in Europe I believe. Although most of my stereotypes about Japan have been confirmed to some extent while experiencing living in Japan, soon I realized that my image was just a crust of what Japanese culture is about. In many views Japan is not that modern as I expected and Japanese culture became for me a big teaser, full of constant paradoxes.

and japanese people are sometimes confusing for me and it takes a lots of effort to understand a little bit of this unique culture. In many aspects japanese people have lots of freedom in their lifestyle. On the other side they have to follow many cultural rules (which are hidden) and make it uneasy for them to take clear decisions including direct and open style of speech as we experience in Western Europe.

I have mentioned only some areas of my curiousness. Next week I am leaving Japan, but there are still more questions than answers about Japanese people and culture for me:-)

Education in Japan

I saw a small baby crying next to the Buddhist temple. In contrast to some mothers from my cultural background Japanese woman did not feel any displeasure and did not try to do anything to stop the baby crying.

The kid had one of the last opportunities to act without bondage of societal rules. To Japanese children before entering the school is given freedom which is based on premise that any limitation or pressure on kids mind could harm their mental state. This is very important for some Japanese one would say.

It seems that it is firstly the primary education goal is to “restrain” Japanese kids and show them the adaptive and social conformist behavior. It seems like this way of socializing goes hand in hand with teaching pupils of primary school for respect to Japanese traditions and culture.

I was wondering how it is possible that Japanese education is so successful in its moderating effect. One of the biggest reasons might be a big respect for school and education in general. According to Japanese Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture (Monbushou 2005) almost 98% of Japanese go to High school. Another 76% of all 18-year old students attend higher education and 44% visit 4-year Universities. Just think if we find such a respect in our own and other countries?
On one hand, the primary education in Japan is taming the children and restrict with societal rules in a sense of greeting, morning exercise, obeisance to superior and so on. On the other hand, the school is creating a space for personal development. The aim of primary education, in contrast to high school, is not memorizing a quantum of information but bring up a social habit. As an example I can mention the common eating of pupils and teachers, common cleaning of classroom, corridors and toilet facilities. All these things are building a deep relationship to a concrete place I think.

But all this starts changing in the age of puberty. It is the time when pupils are deciding their next future. In Japan it is the lower stage of secondary education. When I was speaking about it with my Japanese friends, I have been told they have been sort of “leading to sense of choosing their own school carrier”. In praxis that means transition from “school of play” to “memorizing”.
The students learn an incredible amount of information, which they have to vindicate only in writing-test forms. It is a heavy preparation for the entrance exams on high school. It is a time of big societal pressure. The idea of Japanese society that only better education can help with better life, is inherently included. Very similar form of pressure is evident while students are applying for studying at University.

Interesting situation is happening when students are accepted at University. Uniform? Cut black hair? This is all gone and as we can see also at Momoyama Gakuin university campus, they are walking in torn jeans and colorful hair on many ways and styles. Sometimes the Japanese students seems a bit strange to international students in the way they behave and what they do (explicitly not studying almost at all). Many of the international students think the Japanese students are even premature when they first time experience meeting with them and say: “they are like kids”. During the University life students can alter their lifestyles, date, and enjoy freedom as in the before-school age.
The time of this freedom and award is not very long. During the last year students start their job-haunting and concentrate on their professional carrier. The time of studying at the University is a kind of premium time in the life of Japanese person not only in a fashion sense, but also in terms of other societal conventions. But soon after graduation, there is a cut and entry into work. This is the change of giving a hand to a guy with hair “like a girl” and in one week meeting the same combed person in company uniform.

There is a question whether or not this kind of system is sophisticated. If we agree that education can be any sort of experience, than time at the university can be a really enhancing for ones self as well as for the regimental company praxis. Japanese educational system includes something what we can observe in a Japanese civilization and society. There are many things that seemingly can not coexist together. There is inconsistence in positions from a westerner point of view and many paradoxes in everyday life. Despite of this, at the end everything is functional like in a symbiosis. Like a modern sky scraper next to a traditional Buddhist temple in Tokyo city centre.

KOYASAN

Koyasan is a bit long way from Osaka, but it is definitely one of the most amazing places in Japan I have ever visited. It is a World Heritage site and treasure house of esoteric culture. It is located about 1,000 meter above sea level sorrounded by mountains on all sides.

Going to Koyasan is already so big difference from the grey architectonical feeling of Japan. On the picture is a cable car and the only acces by transport. Koyasan is the centre of Shingon Buddhism founded in 816 by Kukai, known as Kobodaishi through his posthumous honorific name. Today, traditions are carried on by 117 temples including 53 shokubo or temples that provide lodging accomodations and dining. Service is done by young men who are training to be Buddhist priests. We have spend with my friend only one day and maybe thanks for the rain we were almost alone when entering temples or walking around.

On this photo is inside of 48,5 m tall Konpondaito Pagoda situated right in the middle of Koyasan. This pagoda was build as a seminary for the esoteric practices of Shingon Buddhism. This pagoda and the Okunoin Temple form a large sanctuary.

Surrounded by mountains on three sides and with the Tama River running along the foot, Okunoin Temple sits in a tranquil location. Here, You will find the mausoleum of Kobodaishi, hall of lanterns, offerings hall, fudo hall, mausoleum bridge, ossuary, sutra hall and mizukake jizo guardian deities, where you throw the water over Buddhas figures for the mass of the dead.

This is the central sanctuary of the Daishi faith. On the both sides of cemetery path a half million tombs developing massive impressive aspect.

Visit of Momoyama High School 18/6/2008

This is a few 17 or 18 years old Japanese high school students who went studying for 1 year to Canada. Their English was very good and fluent. The behaviour was also more free than I would expect. The expression on the photo is pretty much describing their attitude not being shy anymore:-)

This is how the clasrron looked liked after entering. In one room there are around 43 students sitting each separately.

Our meeting in cafeteria. We have been on excursion through the whiole building. Momoyama High school is a private school with open offices for teachers and modern equipment. Not many of the students enter the Momoyama University which seems not be be one of the best choices for them.

The school uniforms are not obligatory. Students can choose their dress code, however lots of girls choose at the end the uniform, because they do not have to think about other options as one of them told me. Interesting was their founding the life in Canada boring. High school students after finishing their class does not have free time, but visit Cram schools for making up their knowledge due to a tough entrance exams for Universities. most of them are coming back from school around 8PM.
